Why am I passionate about this?

Photography has always been more than just images for me. I love capturing the moments that define a movement. I started out photographing punk bands, drawn to their raw creativity. Later, I shot Hollywood legends, but at the core, it was always about the same thing: artists fighting to make something that lasts. These stories feel like snapshots of a life I know well, and they bring me back to the packed punk club where everything started.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Just Kids

Michael Grecco Why I love this book

The book is a personal story by poet, singer, and songwriter Patti Smith about her deep and long relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.

Not only are both of their lives fascinating to me, but I am deeply in love with their bodies of work. The relationship is similar to some of the musician-photographer relationships I have had, where the mutual creative thinking is inspiring.

What is this book about?

WINNER OF THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD

“Reading rocker Smith’s account of her relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, it’s hard not to believe in fate. How else to explain the chance encounter that threw them together, allowing both to blossom? Quirky and spellbinding.” -- People

It was the summer Coltrane died, the summer of love and riots, and the summer when a chance encounter in Brooklyn led two young people on a path of art, devotion, and initiation.

Patti Smith would evolve as a poet and performer, and Robert Mapplethorpe would direct his highly provocative style toward photography. Bound in innocence…

Michael Grecco Why I love this book

Viv Albertine’s memoir is raw and completely unfiltered, just like punk itself. I was hooked from the first page because it lives and breathes punk while also documenting its history.

Having photographed the New York and Boston punk scene firsthand, I connected deeply with her storytelling. It reminded me of the energy I felt photographing the bands back in the late 1970s.

A year later, she was the guitarist in the hugely influential all-girl band the Slits, who fearlessly took on the…

Book cover of Kiki Man Ray: Art, Love, and Rivalry in 1920s Paris

Michael Grecco Why I love this book

I love a good story about artists who refuse to play by the rules, and Kiki Man Ray was exactly that. Her story hit me because it’s all about pushing boundaries, no matter who tries to shut the door.

What I loved most was how alive this book made that era feel. It’s like I could almost hear the jazz, feel the cigarette smoke in the air, and get lost in the chaos of Montparnasse. It’s the kind of energy that makes you want to create and exist loudly and I love it!

What is this book about?

In freewheeling 1920s Paris, Kiki de Montparnasse captivated as a nightclub performer, sold out gallery showings of her paintings, starred in Surrealist films, and shared drinks and ideas with the likes of Jean Cocteau and Marcel Duchamp. Her best-selling memoir-featuring an introduction by Ernest Hemingway-made front-page news in France and was immediately banned in America. All before she turned thirty.

Kiki was once the symbol of bohemian Paris. But if she is remembered today, it is only for posing for several now-celebrated male artists, including Amedeo Modigliani and Alexander Calder, and especially photographer Man Ray. Why has Man Ray's legacy…

Book cover of The Internet Is Not the Answer

Michael Grecco Why I love this book

As someone who’s spent a career capturing moments, both on film and in digital, I’ve had a front-row seat to the way the internet has upended creative industries. At first, it seemed like a gift. Then, I watched artists lose control of their work, their rights, and their livelihoods. That’s why I decided to push back by founding The American Society for Collective Rights Licensing.

Reading this book felt like having someone finally call out the problem for what it is. It made me think about how much we’ve sacrificed in the name of “progress”.

1 author picked The Internet Is Not the Answer as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

In this sharp and witty book, long-time Silicon Valley observer and author Andrew Keen argues that, on balance, the Internet has had a disastrous impact on all our lives.

By tracing the history of the Internet, from its founding in the 1960s to the creation of the World Wide Web in 1989, through the waves of start-ups and the rise of the big data companies to the increasing attempts to monetize almost every human activity, Keen shows how the Web has had a deeply negative effect on our culture, economy and society.

Informed by Keen's own research and interviews, as…

Book cover of Hold Me Down

Michael Grecco Why I love this book

I’ve always been really into crime fiction, and when you throw in a gritty concert setting, I’m all in. This book nailed that feeling, the sound, and the unspoken tension between past and present. It’s very cool how the concert setting wasn’t just the background noise but part of the mystery itself.

It felt like being backstage at a show where something’s just a little off. It kept me flipping pages way too late, and honestly, that’s when you know a crime novel really delivers.

What is my book about?

Photographer and filmmaker Michael Grecco was in the thick of things, documenting the club scene in places like Boston and New York as punk rock morphed into the post-punk and new wave movements that dominated from the late ’70s to the early ’90s. From Sex Pistols to Blondie, Talking Heads, Human Sexual Response, Elvis Costello, Joan Jett, The Ramones, and many others, Grecco captured in black and white and color the raw energy, sweat, and antics that characterized the alternative music of the time. In addition to concert photography, he shot album covers and promotional pieces that round out his impressively extensive photo collection. Presented here for the first time, watch the clubs and bands as they evolved into the icons that they have become today.
